LP gives Christmas baskets to the needy
Filed Under Las Piñas | Leave a Comment
Some 7,000 indigent families and senior citizens were given bags of grocery items as Christmas gifts from Mayor Vergel Aguilar and his wife, former mayor Mel Aguilar together with city officials yesterday at Verdant Covered Court in Barangay Pamplona Tres.
The giving out of Noche Buena package to the city’s less privileged is a tradition kept by Mayor Vergel “Nene” Aguilar and his family over the years “to ensure our fellow Las Piñeros would have food on their table to celebrate Christmas”.
Mayor Aguilar downplayed the havocs caused by typhoons that hit the country the past months saying these should stop them from keeping the gift-giving tradition since the people deserve to have something this Yuletide season.
“A bag of grocery items for each family of the needy and the elderly, although modest, could provide relief to our less fortunate kababayan that would allow them to enjoy the Christmas celebration,” Aguilar said.
The city’s social welfare department and office of the senior citizen were responsible for the distribution of Christmas baskets to beneficiaries coming from 20 barangays.
Late last month, bonuses and cash gifts due to city hall employees and workers were released on orders of Aguilar in order for them to cope with the expenses during the holiday season. These benefits include the 13th month pay, cash gift, productivity bonus, monetization and other allowances.

Las Piñas City Mayor Vergel Aguilar lauded the more than 2,000 new graduates of the local technical skills training center as he credited Senator Manny Villar for his crucial role in providing livelihood opportunities to them.
In his speech during the recent commencement exercises, Mayor Aguilar urged the new batch of graduates to be more innovative and to persevere in their acquired skills to emulate the success of Senator Villar whose vision of sipag at tiyaga (diligence and perseverance) is the rallying point of the program.
Aguilar credited Villar as the moving force behind this livelihood endeavor, way back since he became a congressman, by providing a building for the training facility and the necessary assistance to the graduates for employment or small capital to start their own business. He added that Senator Villar’s vision and ideas of helping Las Piñeros find gainful employment through skills development and training helped make the Las Piñas Training Center an outstanding training center in the country.
“Like the story of Senator Villar, you too can become successful entrepreneurs with sheer sipag at tiyaga using your skills and training,” Aguilar urged the graduates.
The skills and manpower training center produces batches of graduates of not less than 2,000 every quarter or 8,000 every year who are Las Piñas residents. It provides free educational skills for those who could not afford to pursue college education for lack of financial capability.
The livelihood-training courses which give focus and priority to skills development courses like welding, auto mechanic, computer technician, bar tending and cooking, and related skills, which is in demand locally and abroad are conducted in coordination with the Technical Education & Skills Development Administration (TESDA).
