MANILA, Philippines—It will be a long weekend this week after Malacanang on Wednesday announced that May 3 will be a non-working holiday in the country so as to give Filipinos a chance to observe Labor Day.

Labor Day or May 1 falls on a Saturday this year but in keeping with its holiday economics policy, Malacanang has decided to move the observation of the holiday on the nearest working day, which is May 3 or this Monday, Executive Secretary Leandro Mendoza said.

Labor officials the other day said President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will not make any wage increase announcements on Labor Day because wage boards in seven regions that have filed wage hike petitions were still holding deliberations that may conclude only in two or three weeks’ time.

But they said the Palace will hold a “mega, mega” job fair on May 1 that will see the government offering 60,000 to 80,000 local and foreign jobs, the biggest ever in the nine-year-old Arroyo administration.

MANILA, Philippines – Authorities on Tuesday announced the arrest of three suspected members of a drug syndicate and the seizure of P30 million worth of methamphetamine hydrochloride (shabu) in a raid in Parañaque City early this week.

National Capital Region police office Director Roberto Rosales said authorities launched a drug bust on April 18 in Doña Soledad, Better Living, Parañaque City, leading to the arrest of William Chua alias Sunxiao Xu, 25, Andy Hong alias Wenxian Hong, 32, and Kim Sy alias Xiuqin Shi, 29.

The drug bust also led to the confiscation of 7.5 kilos of shabu amounting to P30 million, as well as marked money amounting to P20,000.

Rosales said police earlier received information that Chua, already implicated in operating an illegal drugs laboratory in Cainta, Rizal that was dismantled last 2009, was again operating, this time in Metro Manila.

“After receiving the information, I directed the immediate case build-up against the suspects which led to this successful buy-bust operation,” Rosales said.

The three suspects were brought to the City Prosecutors Office for Violation of Section 5 (Sale, Trading, Dispensation, Delivery, Transportation) in relation to Section 26 (Conspiracy) and for Violation of Section 11 (Possession of Illegal Drugs), Article 2 of Republic Act 9165 (Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002).

From RMN News:

MANILA, Philippines — A Muntinlupa reelectionist councilor dismissed a complaint against him before the Office of the Ombudsman as a clear case of “political harassment,” which he claimed to have stemmed from his criticism of the City Hall management.

“It is not true that I never attended our sessions. It’s simply a case of political harassment, with the complainant being anonymous,” said Councilor Allen Ampaya in a phone interview. “Is the complainant afraid of being sued for libel?”

Ampaya, who’s running under the banner of former Mayor Jaime Fresnedi, is being investigated for purportedly failing to perform his duties as a member of the city council, which the Ombudsman said “may constitute dereliction of duty, malfeasance or misfeasance.”

Lawyer Christopher Soguilon, resident Ombudsman for the Department of the Interior and Local Government, wrote to Muntinlupa Mayor Aldrin San Pedro requesting assistance in investigating the claim of an alleged taxpayer in the city.

The councilor explained that if he had been neglecting his duties as a member of the city council, his colleagues could have sanctioned him a long time ago.

“We have internal rules in the city council on absenteeism,” he said, adding that he could have been warned or penalized for being absent at least three consecutive years. “I could have been removed from office if the claim is true.”

Ampaya thought the complaint was in retaliation for the open letter he spread throughout the city about the local government’s huge debt.

“They could have been hurt bad by the letter, but I tell you, it’s the truth. I have documents to support my claim,” he said.

Fresnedi is seeking to retake his old post as mayor against San Pedro.

MANILA, Philippines – Metro Manila police chief Director Roberto Rosales on Friday sacked the Mutinlupa City Police chief for issuing a police ID to a civilian, who was arrested along with 2 policemen for extortion.

Rosales named Superintendent Romulo Sapitula as acting chief of the Muntinlupa City Police Station, replacing Senior Superintendent Elmer Jamias.

Jamias has been reassigned to the National Capital Region Police Office’s regional personal holdings and accountings unit.

Aside from his relief, Jamias is also facing criminal and administrative charges.

Rosales had said that Jamias can be charged with serious irregularities in the performance of duties for issuing a Philippine National Police identification card to a civilian with the rank of police inspector.

The civilian, identified as JOel Tordillos, was recently arrested along with Muntinlupa policemen, SPO1 Alfredo Mendoza and PO3 Celestino delos Santos, for allegedly extorting money from a businessman.

Rosales said Jamias’s issuance of a police ID to a civilian was questionable. – Report from Dennis Datu, radio dzMM
