Who really is at fault when we fall victims to dreaded gangs such as Dugo Dugo, Akyat Bahay and Budol Budol?

The authorities? Ourselves?

An Alabang Bulletin reader from Philam Village told us that their neighbors once again fell prey to the Akyat Bahay gang just last week.

WHAT IS HAPPENING?!

At any rate, here are some tips on how to avoid having your belongings (and possibly lives) taken away from you:

1. Make sure that all the possible entrances to your houses are secured. Do people even do that karton thing over their missing air-conditioner units? Make sure all your locks in your gates and doors are working. Secure all your windows too. This applies when you’re on vacation and even if you’re at home.

2. If possible, have a “house-sitter”. Hire a trusted individual or ask a friend to take care of the house if you guys are going on a vacation. These sinister individuals do it even if there are people in the house but leaving it unattended just doubles the chances for your house to be burglarized. You can also ask your neighbors (if you trust them, hehe) to check on your house from time to time.

3. Always leave a night light on. This is another way to ward off burglars. They’re afraid of lights (at least most of them) and will avoid places/houses where they can be seen.

4. Brief your household helpers/house-sitters on emergency numbers and people who might call. This is to avoid getting calls from Dugo Dugo Gang members and also for them to be able to access you (and you alone) whenever there is an emergency.

5. Make sure your household helpers can be trusted. We have heard of a lot of inside jobs and also syndicates composed of maids who steal from their own employers.

6. No to newspapers. Tell the person delivering your newspaper subscription to stop delivering while you’re away or don’t tell him you’re going away but just tell him to stop delivering and just continue when you get back. Having a bunch of newspapers by your doorsteps will alert Akyat Bahay people that the owners are not in the house.

7. Tell the guards that you are leaving if you are going away for a long period of time. This way they can patrol your house more.

Once again, let us all be more careful as times are now more dangerous and criminals are now bolder. Let us discourage them from robbing our hard-earned belongings by being cautious.

Okay, we heard that there was another Budol Budol gang victim in Las Pinas again this weekend (yes, Christmas!).

This is just a few weeks after we reported another Budol Budol Gang (click on the link to find out about the first victim’s story) operation in a private subdivision wherein an elderly woman was robbed of her laptop, three cellphones and other valuables.

The most recent victim (how many victims do we need to have before there’s action?!), we heard was an elderly balikbayan.

The same set of people responsible for the first Budol Budol incident were identified by the victim. Wow, imagine that. Great job by Las Pinas Police not to have caught them and to have allowed them to victimize residents once again in the same vicinity.

Here are some tips on how to avoid being a victim of this shameless Budol Budol Gang:

1. What did our parents tell us when we were kids? Yes, DON’T TALK TO STRANGERS.

This is the best way to avoid being hypnotized and ordered what to do by Budol Budol Gang members. If you don’t talk to them, they won’t have a chance to victimize you.

2. Walk away when you sense something suspicious.

These people will amaze you with their stories so it is best to just walk away when they start talking about something that you don’t have any knowledge of.

Their usual modus is to mention familiar names or stories. If they ask how your grandchildren are and you don’t have grandchildren, just walk away and report the incident to your security guards. They will claim to be friends of your nephews and nieces too so be wary of their stories.

3. Don’t be greedy.

The gang members will try to say that they are in a current business deal and will ask for your help and will promise you commissions or other freebies. Do not believe them. You can’t get money THAT easily. Don’t let them blind you with money.

4. Report to security personnel.

Once you are in the safety of your house, call your village security guards immediately or your local police hotline.

Report what happened to you and describe to them the people who tried to victimize you.

5. Be aware of your surroundings.

Although not everyone around you is out to get your money and belongings, it is still best to treat everyone around you as possible Budol Budol Gang members or other evil individuals.

You don’t have to say “hi” or answer all the questions hurled at you especially by strangers.

Remember, there are a lot of evil people out there. Let us not help them out by making it easier for them to get our hard-earned money.

Let us all be aware. Let us all be careful.

For everyone to have a peaceful but still fun-filled celebration this New Year, here are some safety tips when using firecrackers from ghowto.com:

1. Always purchase firecrackers from a reliable source and follow label directions carefully.

2. Store them in a cool, dry place out of reach of children and pets as well as away from possible hazards such as electrical outlets. Check instructions for special storage directions. Do not try to modify them.

Lots of people open firecrackers and put further powder or other objects – this is very dangerous. A responsible adult should always manage all firecrackers activities.

3. For using firecrackers, select a clear, area in the outdoors away from vehicles, buildings, dry grass or leaves and other inflammable materials.

4. Before lighting, make sure other people are out of range. Stay as far away as possible and light the firecracker using a long lighter or long match. Once the fuse catches fire, move away quickly.

5. Light one item at a time and keep your face, hand and other parts of the body away from the firecracker.

6. Never give firecrackers to young children. Children cannot be familiar with the danger involved and cannot take action properly in case of emergency.

7. Keep unused firecrackers away from firing areas.

8. Don’t use homemade firecrackers.

9. Never throw firecrackers at another person. If one firecracker misdirects it could hit your whole supply and source a big fire or explosion.

10. Never carry firecrackers in your pocket or fire them in glass or metal containers.

11. Keep a bucket of water or fire extinguisher nearby.

12. Do not use or handle firecrackers under the influence of alcohol.

13. Do not lean over the firecrackers since you ignite them.

14. After the cracker pieces are used, dispose off them in a metal trash container safely. Before picking them up, make sure firecrackers have cooled down. Once they cool – place in a bucket of water to make sure they are completely extinguished.

15. If a firecracker malfunctions, do not try to relight it. Douse and soak them with water and throw away.

There you go. Please keep in mind that it’s still safety that should come first during the New Year’s celebration.

Happy New Year, everyone!

Let us all be safe!

Ready, get set, gorge!

By Rey Constantino

Most of us wake up on new year’s day many pounds heavier than our weight the previous year because of our merciless, unrelenting  and non-stop eating binge during the holidays.  To compound this, our muscles tend to be  more sluggish since the cold holiday weather made us lazy and took us away from our slimming machines and daily exercises.  So, how do you resist the t4emptaion of holiday food, glorious food?

Woman’s Day magazine has these helpful tips for the Yuletide season. :

Plan ahead.  Never go to a party on an empty stomach. Instead, have a salad, some fruit and a glass of club soda beforehand. Even if you are taking one of the new weight-control drugs that helps curb appetite, you won’t be able to resist buffet-table temptations if you haven’t eaten for hours.

Quench thirst first.  When you arrive at a party, make the pitcher your first stop. In the holiday rush, you’re  bound to be more thirsty and you’ll down whatever you drink rapidly. Once your thirst  is under control, you can make a glass of wine last or decide if you really need that zillion-calorie glass of eggnog.

Little things add up.  How ;may time have you told yourself you’d take “just a taste” of everything, only to emerge from the buffet line with a plate that would feed the front line of the San Diego Chargers?  Limit yourself to two or three low-fat foods and one  splurge serving per party.

Beware of “fat Free.”     If it’s fat-free, you’ll eat times three.  Having less of the real thing makes more sense.  One dietician who loves dessert recommends sharing a decadent sweet.  The first bites are the best anyway.

Reward yourself.  What normal woman won’t fill up on stuffed mushrooms or luscious pastries if she has nothing but non-fat yogurt and naked celery stalks to look forward to when she gets home?  Plan ahead of time to have a nice dinner after the holiday buffet.  The prospect of a hot, nutritious sit down meal will make it easier to smile and say a polite “no thanks” when the tray of salmon canapés comes around yet again.

REMEMBER:  IT TAKES TWICE AS LONG TO TAKE WEIGHT OFF AS IT TAKES TO PUT ON POUNDS. Kindly disregard this warning if you’re planning to join the Biggest Loser contest next season.   #######
